Taliban Hits NATO Fuel Trucks In Afghanistan, Killing One Officer

One police officer is dead after Taliban suicide bombers attacked NATO fuel trucks in Afghanistan near the Pakistani border.

The officer died in a gunbattle that followed the attack on December 18 near the Torkham border crossing in Nangarhar Province, a key NATO supply route.

Police say suicide bombers detonated a car at the gate of the parking lot of the NATO outpost.

The blast ignited a fire that destroyed several of the tankers.

Attackers dressed in Afghan Army uniforms then stormed the compound.

All of the attackers were killed.

A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack.

The incident came a day after six NATO troops -- believed to be American -- were killed in a helicopter crash in southern Afghanistan.

The cause of the crash is being investigated.
