Six NATO Soldiers Die In Afghan Crash

Six soldiers from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) have been killed in an aircraft crash in southern Afghanistan.

ISAF said the cause of the crash was unknown and was being investigated.

However, it said initial reports indicated there was no fighting in the area at the time of the incident.

It was the deadliest incident for the NATO-led force in Afghanistan in months.

ISAF did not reveal the nationalities of the soldiers, but a U.S. defense official said on condition of anonymity they were American.

U.S. defense officials said one person on board the aircraft survived but was injured.

Local officials said a NATO helicopter crashed in the remote district of Shajau.

The Taliban immediately claimed its fighters shot down a helicopter in Zabul Province, saying eight soldiers aboard were killed.

Based on reporting by Reuters, BBC, and AFP

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
