U.S. To Help Kyrgyz Build Facilities For Border Guards

BISHKEK -- The head of Kyrgyzstan’s border guards, Zakir Tilenov, says the United States is assisting Kyrgyzstan in the construction of six facilities for use by that country's border-guard service.

The planned facilities are reported to include a barracks for border troops, a regional center for the border-guard service in southern Kyrgyzstan, and new checkpoints.

An official of the U.S. Embassy in Bishkek confirmed the plans to RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service.

The embassy official said there are no plans to base U.S. troops at any of the sites.

No details have been made available about the amount of financing or other U.S. assistance for the facilities.
