Suspects Detained In Killing Of Ex-Osh Mayor's Nephew

Two men suspected of involvement in the killing of a nephew of the controversial former mayor of Osh, Kyrgyzstan's second-largest city, have been apprehended.

Osh police spokesman Zamir Sydykov told RFE/RL that the two men -- aged 32 and 42 -- were detained on May 9. They have yet to be charged.

Melis Myrzakmatov's nephew, Jenish Sadiev, died in hospital on May 1, one day after unknown attackers shot him while he was at home in Osh.

Sadiev, 39, had a criminal record and was involved in the automobile import business.

Myrzakmatov said the attack against his nephew was done in an effort to frighten him.

Myrzakmatov was the only top official with ties to ousted President Kurmanbek Bakiev who had managed to remain in his post.

He failed to regain his post in a January mayoral election after the Kyrgyz prime minister sacked him in December.
