MOSCOW -- The Russian Federal Migration Service has announced that the head of the agency's department in Vladimir Oblast has been fired for improperly deporting a French journalist from Russia.

Anne Nivat, a correspondent for several French media outlets, was forced to leave Russia on February 12.

The head of the Vladimir Oblast's migration department, Oleg Brechko, had ruled that her visa had to be annulled after he learned that Nivat had met with local opposition activists.

Nivat is a journalist and writer who wrote the book "That Damned War," about women in the war-torn Russian republic of Chechnya in the 1990s.

Nivat has visited Afghanistan, Iraq, and Chechnya in covering the armed conflicts there.
