A Moscow court on August 6 sentenced in absentia Russian journalist Dmitry Kolezev to 7 1/2 years in prison on a charge of "distributing false information about the Russian military motivated by political hatred." The charge stems from Kolezev's 2022 online articles about atrocities allegedly committed by occupying Russian armed forces against civilians in Ukraine. Several Russian journalists and public figures in exile have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms in absentia since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
