Police Commander, Prison Officers Held In North Macedonia On Suspicion Of Aiding Prisoner's Escape

A court in North Macedonia has ordered the arrest of a police commander and two prison officers on suspicion they helped a convicted murderer escape from prison on January 12. Another prison officer was barred from leaving the country. The prosecutor's office said convicted killer Bekim Memeti was allowed to escape while he was being transferred to a hospital in Idrizovo after harming himself. A hunt is under way for the escapee, officials said. Memeti was sentenced to 21 years in prison for murder and drug trafficking in 2016.
