Six Killed, Including Pro-Government Tribal Elder, In Northern Pakistan

As many as six people, including a pro-government tribal elder, were killed as a remote-controlled bomb hit a vehicle in Pakistan's Bajaur tribal district on May 11.

Major Rahmat Gul of the Bajaur Levies Force told RFE/RL that the bomb targeted the car of Malak Muhammada Gul as he was traveling with five other people.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Taliban have often targeted pro-government tribal elders in the area.

Last week, a former member of Pakistan's parliament was targeted in the same area but escaped unhurt.

Pakistan began an offensive to clear insurgent bases from the North Waziristan tribal district in June after a bloody Taliban attack on Karachi airport.
