BISHKEK -- Kyrgyz President Almazbek Atambaev says a clash over the weekend demonstrates the importance of cooperation in dealing with border issues.

Speaking on April 29 at a gathering of Shanghai Cooperation Organization member-states' security council secretaries in Bishkek, Atambaev cited violence that broke out on April 27 near the Kyrgyz-Tajik border.

Dozens of citizens in Tajikistan's Vorukh exclave, which is inside Kyrgyz territory, clashed with Kyrgyz workers over the ongoing construction of a road bypassing the exclave.

Twelve Kyrgyz citizens were injured in the clashes. Four remain hospitalized.

Three criminal cases were launched against people living in Vorukh, and Tajik officials have agreed to pay compensation to those who were injured.

Atambaev said Tajik and Kyrgyz officials have shown "a wonderful example of mutual understanding and cooperation" in resolving the issue.
