Kyrgyz Antidrug Directorate Chief In Osh Detained For Bribe

OSH, Kyrgyzstan -- The Kyrgyz State Committee for National Security (UKMK) says a top antidrug police official in the southern city of Osh has been arrested for allegedly taking a bribe.

In a statement issued on November 12, the UKMK said that the chief of Kyrgyzstan's Southern Directorate for the Fight against Illegal Drugs, Eldar Kudaiberdiev, was caught in the act of accepting $5,000 as a bribe from a local citizen.

Kudaiberdiev's subordinate, Momun Makhamatjanov, was also reportedly arrested.

The two men are suspected of taking part in a scheme to extort $15,000 from a local citizen.

The alleged victim said he was threatened with fake drug charges unless he would pay the sum to the two officials.

Investigations into the allegations are under way.
