BISHKEK -- The warden of the detention center of the Kyrgyz State Committee for National Security (UKMK) has been fired following the death in custody of a traffic-police officer, a UKMK spokesperson said.

Bakyt Jumabaev was fired after 46-year-old police officer Aibek Eshbaev, who was arrested on suspicion of accepting bribes earlier this month, was found dead in his cell at the UKMK detention center in Bishkek, on February 13.

Investigations were launched after Eshbaev's relatives and friends demonstrated, rejecting official assertions that Eshbaev committed suicide.
