Dmitry Savelyev, a member of the Russian parliament's upper chamber, was detained on August 2 on suspicion of involvement in a plot to kill his business partner. Savelyev was detained after his colleagues in the Federation Council stripped him of immunity at the request of the Prosecutor-General's Office. He is accused of ordering a would-be assassin to kill his business partner last year, a plot that was not carried out due to the Federal Security Service's intervention. The 55-year-old politician is the former president of the Transneft oil transportation company. He served in the parliament's lower chamber, the State Duma, for 17 years before becoming a member of the Federation Council in 2006.
