Afghan officials say Taliban forces have fought their way to within 2 kilometers of Uruzgan Province’s capital, Tarin Kot.
Abdul Karim, the chief administrator of Tarin Kot, warned on September 7 that the provincial capital is likely to fall to Taliban militants unless the Afghan government provides air support and reinforcements for embattled security forces in the city.
The attacks in Uruzgan Province come as overstretched Afghan security forces and a U.S.-led military mission have been focused on confronting Taliban attacks in the nearby southern province of Helmand and the northern city of Kunduz.
Government forces also are battling Islamic State militants in the eastern province of Nangarhar.
The Taliban on September 7 claimed that its fighters had overrun 15 government security posts near Tarin Kot, including a "strategic military base."
The Taliban said that "all the surrounding areas of the capital are under tight siege and attacks."
The group also said it would offer what it called "an amnesty" to any government forces or civilian government employees who join the militant group's efforts to capture Tarin Kot.
