There has been a deadly suicide bomb attack in Afghanistan's southern city of Kandahar.

Javed Faisal, a spokesman for the provincial government, told RFE/RL that six people were killed and 20 injured in the attack on August 31.

The suicide bomber detonated his explosives outside a branch of the Kabul Bank in the city.

Faisal said four of the victims were civilians, one was a policeman, and the other a security guard.

An official at Kandahar Hospital told RFE/RL's correspondent that eight people were killed and more than 25 were injured.

The bank building was badly damaged.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility, but suspicion will likely fall on Taliban militants, who are especially strong in southern Afghanistan.
