Afghan Police Detain Three Over Priest's Abduction

Reports from Afghanistan say government security forces have arrested three members of the Taliban who are suspected of being involved in the kidnapping of a Christian Jesuit priest from India who was working in the western province of Herat.

Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said the three men were being questioned about hideouts used by those who abducted the 47-year-old priest and aid worker on June 2.

The priest, Father Alexis Prem Kumar, was kidnapped while visiting a school for refugee children in the village of Sohadat, about 25 kilometers from the city of Herat.

Kumar is the country director in Afghanistan for Jesuit Refugee Services, an educational charity working with displaced and impoverished communities in Afghanistan.
